ENG 111: Composition I: Writing and Rhetoric

Julie Bolt

Julie Bolt (she/her) grew up in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of  New York City. She spent 20 years of her adult life studying, working and expanding her world view in other states, in Philadelphia, PA; New Mexico, Arizona and California. She loved them all but the pull of NYC are roots are strong. At age 40, she moved back to the city, in the Washington Heights neighborhood, and landed her dream job as part of the English faculty of Bronx Community College of the City University of New York. 

Julie earned her PHD in Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature. Her studies were specifically focused on Freirian style critical pedagogy, combined with decolonial literature and theory of the “Americas.” During this period she also studied in Xelajú, Guatemala and at The American Indian Language Development in Tucson. 

Several of her scholarly works can be found in Radical Teacher: a Socialist, Feminist and Anti-Racist Journal, as well as The Journal of Cultural Studies, Facts on File: The Beatniks in 20th Century Literature, Puerto del Sol and more. The book based on her dissertation is called Border Pedagogy for Democratic Practice. Julie presented her scholarship at multiple conferences, including NeMLA. 

She also holds an M.A. in American Literature and Post-Colonial Theory from New Mexico State University and an M.Ed from Temple University. 

Julie’s first love has alway been poetry.  She majored in Creative Writing at Bard College. Julie has published extensively in journals and anthologies. Recent anthologies include: A Shape Produced by a Curve (Great Weather for Media), When Women Speak Anthology 2023, New Generations Beat Anthologies 2022 and 2023 (New Generation Beat Publications) Beat Style Love (New Generation Beat Publications), Brownstone Poets Anthology 2023, Our Changing Earth (The Poet), Natural Worlds (New Generation Beat Publications) and more 

Many of Julie’s published works are included in her poetry collection Time Sensitive. The title poem from this collection was nominated for Best of the Net 2023. 

Her poems have been published in The Poetica Review, The Raven’s Perch, Home Planet News, Club Plum, Shot Glass Journal, New Verse News, Red River Review Slow Trains and more. She has performed her poetry in NY, NJ, CA and Malta. She frequently reads at Open Mics and has been a feature reader ten times between 2021-2023. 

Julie was a recipient of the Verna Newman Rule Fellowship for Best Graduate work, two NEH Scholarships and recently the Andrew W. Mellon fellowship for Transformative Learning in the Humanities. 

Otherwise, her passions include exploring new places, nature and the arts. She has a young adult son and currently lives in Fort Lee, NJ with her husband and cat, Kazoo.
