Our English 111 course theme is “American Challenges of the 21st Century.” We want to define “challenge” not as obstacles that bring us down, but as opportunities that help us move forward and grow, as individuals, as society and as a nation. So, the first question we ask is whether it’s the challenges make America into what it is, a nation with a unique identity in the world. With this in mind, I invite you all to study, analyze, reflect upon, and write essays on American challenges of the 21st century.

The primary goal in English 111 is to make you think deeply and critically, so you can debate/argue from multiple points of view, some of the significant social and economic challenges we are facing in the U.S. today. As a generation that has come of age in the 21st century, you are ideally positioned to discuss the big problems that we face now: the problem of gun violence, the problem of racism, the problem of growing economic inequality, the problem of immigration, and the issues raised by the adoption of technology/social media at multiple levels of our daily lives.
